This beautiful period house is unique in its hilltop setting with exquisite views and a real feeling of being in the open countryside. At the same time, it’s just 12 mins walk from Frome, a creative, colourful town full of independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and culture.
The approach to the house takes you down a drive with immediate views across the six acres of grounds, and the beautiful Vallis Vale beyond. If you arrive at sunset, you will be greeted with a vibrantly beautiful sky above the west-facing land.
The house is steeped in stunning period features, and the large, period front door leads you straight into the spacious hall with a beautiful Edwardian tiled floor. The hallway is surrounded by very large, high ceilings and evenly proportioned rooms.
The kitchen is the heart of the house, with a warm Aga and beautiful views across the west facing land. The kitchen is fully fitted out for keen cooks, including a larder to store your food, and has a large oak table and chairs to seat up to 10 for cosy kitchen meals.
Next to the kitchen is a stunning south-facing living room, with a huge bay window and a beautiful working stone fireplace. The room has large, comfy sofas, and is decorated in a serene, blanched colour palette for ultimate peacefulness.
On the other side of the hall is a large dining room again with a huge south facing bay window. The large and striking glass and teak root table is the centrepiece of the room and can seat 10 (12 max). A drinks globe, working fireplace and enormous green and gold wall hanging set the scene for decadent dining.
A cosy snug in a calming shade of green offers a big sofa and large TV with Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon installed for you to enjoy cosy movies. Tucked in the corner is a desk for quiet working, benefiting from the Superfast wifi 140m. The snug has double doors leading out into the garden.
The bright and colourful playroom is any child’s dream. It is well equipped with huge fancy dress box, beautiful wooden toys, lots of books and a tipi to crawl into and dream. Suitable for kids under 5.
There is a stylish dark green bathroom downstairs, and behind the kitchen is a utility room for shoes, coats and two washing dryers.
Go up the period staircase past a beautiful 6 foot oil painting and you will find five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The master bedroom is a vast space, overlooking the west facing grounds, and decorated in serene greens and whites, lots of plants and exposed beams. The super king sleigh bed sits majestically in the centre of the space. The master bedroom has a luxurious en suite bathroom, with a roll top bath, shower and his and hers sinks.
There are two further very large bedrooms at the front of the house, with large bay windows and fireplace features. One of these bedrooms has a super king sized bed and the other has a king sized bed.
The fourth double bedroom has a king sized bed, an en suite bathroom with a shower and north facing views across the valley. A fifth smaller bedroom has a single bed. All bedrooms have room-darkening shades, cotton linen and fluffy pillows and duvets, for a ‘home from home’ sleeping experience. At the top of the stairs is a family bathroom with a shower and bath.
The house has an enclosed back garden behind the snug, with one dining area with wrought iron chairs and tables in the shade of the house, and a second dining area on a viewing platform raised above the garden, to enjoy the beautiful surrounding views. The garden has a set of swings, a see saw, a sand pit, and an array of beautiful plants including a stunning wisteria which climbs a pergola at the back of the house, and also envelops the house at the front.
The front garden opens out into the wider six acres of grounds, where you can run around, take a walk and enjoy the wild flowers in spring, or sit on one of the strategically placed seats to enjoy the breathtaking sunsets over the valley.
Things to note: We are in the vicinity of the road, which can be heard and in particular commuter slots 7-9 am & 4-6 pm. The views west towards the white horse look over the road, for example.
Although this is our loving home and we have poured a lot of love into it, it is still a quirky old period house, with a few things that might not make sense initially until explained! There are also plenty of things here that are not brand new, just to manage expectations (kitchen worktops and bathroom fittings for example).
We also share the drive with our neighbors on both sides and with the guests to the adjoining holiday barns. Neighbours cars do pass close to our side door - 2 of our doors open directly out onto the open drive. The back door area though is completely walled in.
We have 2 holiday barns next door too that can sleep 8 total, if of interest please message us through Airbnb and we can send you the links to them via Airbnb.
Car port available too, with EV charging port available from a 3 pin plug installed in port.
From the grounds you can directly access the Mendip Way walking path, which takes you down to the river Frome, and then further along the beautiful river and temperate rainforest that surrounds it, to great Elm and as far as the coast.
The surrounding area is full of spectacular nature walks, from Cley Hill to East Woodlands, the Longleat Estate, the Orchardleigh estate and more.
Longleat, Stourhead, the Newt and Hauser and Wirth all make for wonderful day trips, and are within 30 min drives.
